Earn a Scholarship Through WoW Achievements at the University of Silicon Valley

The University of Silicon Valley has unveiled the Max Achievement Scholarship, recognizing students who have demonstrated extraordinary mastery, persistence, and systems thinking through the completion of rare and demanding achievements in digital gaming environments... including World of Warcraft!

The Max Achievement Scholarship at USV

At the University of Silicon Valley, we believe mastery takes many forms. The Max Achievement Scholarship honors students who have demonstrated exceptional persistence, systems thinking, and creative problem-solving — even in digital worlds. These are the same cognitive skills that fuel innovation, entrepreneurship, and polymathic excellence.

If you’ve earned it in-game, it can count toward your future.

Offering up to $15,000 per year, the scholarship seeks to recognize mastery in digital gaming environments, cultivating the same competencies that drive innovation and leadership, such as persistence, motivation, optimization, and self-directed learning. In their words, USV believes mastery is mastery—whether expressed through code, art, design, or virtual worlds.

Achievements are separated into two tiers under a wide variety of categories, such as MMORPGs & live service games, which includes two criteria for World of Warcraft. Citing long-term systems engagement, the first requires The Loremaster achievement, maximizing all 13 professions, and over 25 exalted reputations. The second looks for team coordination and optimization in achieving Midnight Keystone Master: Season One.

Additionally, StarCraft II is featured for RTS optimization under the Strategy, Simulation & Analytical Mastery category, requiring all Campaign Mastery achievements.

Unfortunately, there's nothing for Diablo fans or Classic WoW (though its version of Loremaster may still be applicable), however, custom achievement submissions may also be submitted, with documentation of their rarity and an explanation of the mastery involved. This could most certainly apply to other World of Warcraft achievements as well, though of course the scholarship is only available to University of Silicon Valley students.

As per the FAQ, only 10-15 of these awards are estimated for the inaugural year, so this may be highly competitive program, but it remains a very interesting initiative engaging goal-oriented gamers. Just as we've seen companies, universities, and even militaries engage that interest through the creation of competitive gaming teams, we've also seen players leverage their gaming experience on professional resumes, particularly when it comes to the leadership skills of managing competitive World of Warcraft guilds.
