What the Recent Private Server Closures Could Mean for the Future of Classic

With the recent injunction against Project Ascension, and their win against Turtle WoW earlier this year, Blizzard is showing a pattern of behavior that mirrors a similar event that took place back in 2017. While the reason for these closures may be obvious to some, let's take a look back at another private server shutdown and the events that followed afterward.

Stormforge Project Private Server Closure

Before Turtle WoW grew to become the most popular "Classic +" private server, there was another server that caught Blizzard's attention that launched in 2015. Nostalrius was a Vanilla Classic private server that ran on Patch 1.12. While this server did not have all of the new content and features of many modern private servers, Nostalrius was still infringing on Blizzard's IP and soon became one of the largest private servers of all time, with over 800,000 registered accounts.

Fewer than 14 months after launching, Nostalrius was shut down, as Blizzard issued a cease and desist, citing breach of copyright. One and a half years after the shutdown of Nostalrius, Blizzard announced World of Warcraft: Classic at BlizzCon 2017.

With all of this in mind, the recent private server shutdowns could indicate a familiar pattern. Once all of the major Classic+ servers have been closed, many believe that Blizzard will finally unveil what's next for WoW Classic. Furthermore, many speculate that this announcement could come as early as BlizzCon 2026 in September.

While there's no guarantee that the next iteration of Classic will be announced, Blizzard's pattern of behavior seems to indicate that they are setting something up in the Classic+ space, and what better time to reveal this than at WoW's flagship event?
