New Standalone Game Mode in Patch 12.1.7
In the State of Azeroth presentation, a new standalone game mode was revealed currently slated for release in Midnight Patch 12.1.7 due Late Autumn of 2026. We didn't get much more information beyond a concept art for a dark and shrouded town in Azeroth haunted by an ethereal glowing magic reminiscent of the Drust of Kul Tiras.

This new standalone mode is being made by the team that brought us Plunderstorm and Remix (of which we saw those highlighted in the presentation) and would be entirely separate from the core WoW game loop.

Later in the year we also have a new standalone event coming from the same group of mad scientists that brought you game modes like Plunderstorm or Remix. We'll have more to share on this as we get closer to the date. This is going to be another separate standalone mode that exists alongside the core World of Warcraft loop.

While that's not exactly a lot to go on, we have gotten hints at potential future game modes in the past. Let's check out what we've learned previously.

PAX East 2025

At the Evolving Azeroth Panel at PAX East in May 2025 we learned that there were new experimental game modes in development for future release. The key art showcased at the event depicted the town of Darkshire within the haunted forests of Duskwood which does seem to line up with the above concept art.

Blizzard confirmed at PAX that this upcoming game mode would not be a Battle Royale, like Plunderstorm. Instead, it will have a vibe that is more similar to a "scary story" leading many to speculate about a potential murder mystery party game possibly inspired by the popular Among Us.

Vampire Survivors Datamining
Way back at the end of 2023 in Dragonflight, we datamined some new scenescript files which are typically used for various minigames and cutscenes within WoW. Unfortunately, nothing ever materialized from the datamining and information was limited beyond the below entries.

10.2.5 - Vampire Survivors Mode - Game Mode - Client Scene (OJF)

10.2.5 - Vampire Survivor Mode - Data - Creatures

While this may be a long scrapped experiment, we're still hopeful we could see some version of this introduced to WoW in the future. Vampire Survivors tonally fits with the "scary story" vibe they're leaning into and the gameplay loop of automatically attacking characters fighting against continuous waves of monsters could be really fun in WoW.

What type of game would you like to see implemented as a standalone mode in WoW? Does the 'Scary Story' aesthetic and haunted vibes of Duskwood appeal to you?
