Midnight Overview
Features of the Damage Meter Death Recap
The new death recap in Blizzard's Damage Meter provides a few more metrics that help players get a better understanding of how a death exactly happened.
Damage events showcase the mob that dealt damage, what spell was used, and how much damage the player took.
Mousing over the damage number or the tombstone provides information on when the damage was taken, leading up to the death (i.e., 0.5 sec before death).
Clicking the death on the Damage Meter pulls up the Death Recap window.
Deaths displayed on the Damage Meter provide the exact time at which the death happened.
The Death Recap tracks the last 1.6 seconds leading up to the death.
Missing Features of the Damage Meter Death Recap
With the Damage Meter now tracking instance deaths, this allows players and groups to be on the same page about how someone may have died. While a step in the right direction, there are a few missing components that could make these death recaps better.
Death Recaps do not give any information regarding defensive utilities used, healing potions used, etc.
The Deaths window of the Damage Meter removes the general in-combat timer.
Outside of larger display numbers, there's no telling what spells Critically Striked the player.
While hovering over spells provides a timestamp of when the damage was taken, there's no immediate display of it in the Recap.
No option to publicly share a Death Recap in Party chat or Instance chat.
When looking at the Details! AddOn Death Recap, their recap provides all of the features mentioned in the list above. On top of that, the Details! Death Recap tracks a significantly longer period of time leading up to the death. When analyzing how a player died, every second matters, and having longer than a 1.6-second window to determine how a player died will prove much more useful.
