Blizzard, Let Us Make the Housing Exteriors of our Dreams

Player Housing is a wonderful addition, beloved by many players who are building their dream homes, but one issue has arisen: Exterior Decor Limits. The current limits for the interior and exterior decor are vastly different, even though the exterior is the part most people will actually see.

Blizzard's Housing Lead Jesse Kurlancheek has already taken note of the feedback in an interview with IGN, but it is currently unclear what the intended limit is.

I think one of the things that gets talked about most frequently is outdoor decor limits are too low. People want to be able to build more stuff outside their house. We're trying. We're going to see where things land and sort of, we want players to be as creative as they want to be. And placing restrictions on folks is never the goal in any of our sort of guiding principles.

Push it to the limit
Interior limits are something Blizzard has continually increased and showcased in the various Player Housing trailers, including the incredibly detailed living room and bedroom spaces, which feature multiple small items and layers upon layers of decorations. That same level of decoration shown in trailers for the indoors is not even remotely possible in the current version of the system.

Outdoor limits currently (even taking early-access into account) are simply not enough, and players are already struggling to find ways to decorate without immediately hitting the limit. The house below is in my guild's neighborhood, and costs the player an eye-watering 160 decor points, out of the maximum 200.

This little reading-nook has quite a bit of smaller bushes and plants, but surprisingly, most of the budget for this particular house is actually spent on the less detailed objects. The perimeter of the house is using Gilnean Stone Wall, which carries a decor weight of 5, and simply enclosing a third of the plot accounts for 70/200 decor points.

Increasing Exterior Decor Limits
A lot of the frustration with the current exterior decor limit is rooted in the unknown. While the Housing Levels show clear incremental gains for internal decor, with the beta showing a full 2360 budget at level 6, the outdoor decor budget remains unchanged. In fact, it is not even mentioned in the renown-style system. In addition to having no source of added exterior decor, Blizzard has disabled many outdoor decorations, including lamp posts, due to concerns about server load.

Concerns about server stability are valid and righteous, but not having any communication of what the limit is intended to be, where it is earned, and leaving players with barely enough budget to decorate a corner is a heavy limit for a system made available on the live versions of the game.

Simply knowing the intention behind outdoor decor, and when and where more budget will be made available, would go a long way toward alleviating the community's current concerns. With Blizzard already taking note in an interview, players can hopefully see the limit raised or at least have outdoor budget earn its rightful place on the Housing Level track.
