Minimap Addon Tech Will Be Disabled in Hotfix

Blizzard has announced through the WoW UI Discord that they will be fixing the Minimap addon tech that has been pervasive throughout the Venomous Abyss.

We previously covered this recent addition to addon modules. It uses the API for minimap rotation to determine the direction of the player and has led to modules for Vashnik, Sszorak, and Ula'tek in the Venomous Abyss and the Delve Boss Azta're.

Blizzard has announced that they are addressing this in a hotfix, rather than in an upcoming patch. It's unknown at this time when this will be going into the game.

Blizzard via WoW UI DiscordWe are working on a hotfix for 12.1.0 to prevent custom minimap compass assets from being used to display mechanic-solving cues. Compass rotation can make custom assets such as arrows or lines appear to exist in the game world.

These restrictions only apply while the player is in an instance and the rotateMinimap CVar is enabled:

Addons can no longer configure MinimapCompassTexture with a custom asset or override supplied as a loose file. These replacements will be ignored, and the texture will reset to the standard game-provided asset when the restrictions take effect.

Addons can no longer call GetRotation, SetTexture, SetAtlas, or SetSVG on MinimapCompassTexture. Attempts to do so will result in a Lua error.

Once this goes live, the following modules that have been very useful will no longer work and can make some of these bosses slightly harder.

Vashnik aiming lines for Mythic difficulty.

Sszorak marker map.

Ula'tek aiming lines on Mythic.

Ula'tek Intermission directions on Mythic.
