Tips and Tricks for The Battle of Mount Hyjal

TBC Anniversary's Phase 3 brings two raids: The Battle for Mount Hyjal and The Black Temple. Mount Hyjal is a unique raid with bosses spawning only after clearing a certain number of trash waves, versus the traditional raid formula that players are used to.

Battle for Mount Hyjal Raid Guide

Crowd Control and Mind Control

In TBC, a large variety of mobs in raids are immune to hard crowd control such as Polymorph and Fear. In the Hyjal Summit raid, almost all mobs are NOT immune to this (with the exception of the Frost Wyrm). Every mob can have crowd control used on them if needed. On top of that, most of these mobs are Undead, which also opens up Turn Undead and Shackle Undead.

On top of that, stuns, silences, and slows also work on all these mobs. Paladins should be using Hammer of Justice on Abominations to help alleviate damage on your tanks, and if a tank were to die in a trash pull, letting the Alliance/Horde army help out, along with slowing mobs with utility such as Frost Trap, can easily save a pull!

However, the most important crowd control spell from all of this is a Priest's Mind Control. If you lose raiders, are low on mana, or need to rebuff, and you have a trash wave that has Shadowy Necromancers, leave one alive at the end and Mind Control them. When you do this, combat will drop, and you can drink, resurrect, rebuff, and then, when you're ready for the next trash wave, break the Mind Control and kill the Necromancer. The final trash wave before Kaz'rogal will have Shadowy Necromancers, and since this is the boss with the mana-drain mechanic Mark of Kaz'rogal, it is strongly advised to use this tech here.

Arcane Bombs

There are four caster mobs in Hyjal Summit: Shadowy Necromancer, Banshee, Gargoyle, and Fel Stalker. Two of these mobs, the Shadowy Necromancers and Fel Stalkers, have very dangerous abilities: the Necromancers Shadow Bolt and the Fel Stalkers Mana Burn. When there are only two of these, they're not too worrisome. However, when there are four or more, it can be dangerous. Engineers can combat this with Arcane Bombs, an AoE bomb that will buy you five seconds of silence.

Using these on a rotation can also prevent these mobs from casting entirely when they're active. Horde players also have access to two separate racials to help with this: the Blood Elf's Arcane Torrent and the Tauren's War Stomp ("Nice War Stomp").

Azgalor and Shadow Resistance

No, you're not reading a Black Temple guide, and yes, we are recommending Shadow Resistance for healers during the Azgalor encounter. This is because his silence ability, Howl of Azgalor, is a Shadow spell and can be resisted. Outside of Doom, Azgalor's abilities are not on timers like other bosses, meaning sometimes his abilities can be cast together - so Rain of Fire and Howl of Azgalor can happen back-to-back. If this does happen, it can lead to a wipe, as Azgalor's Rain of Fire applies a gnarly DoT to players even if they get out of it!

Along with that, Morogrim Tidewalker in Serpentshrine Cavern can drop a necklace, the Pendant of the Lost Ages, which increases resistance to silence effects by 20%. The Azgalor encounter is not a particularly challenging one, but with bad RNG, it can lead to deaths or even a wipe! You do not want to wipe in this raid, as you'll have to start back at Wave 1 of that boss's trash.

Unique Builds and Consumables for Trash

Since trash is very important in this raid, some classes will benefit from unique builds, items, and sets. Retribution Paladins can opt into a Spell Power set, focusing on high AoE damage from Consecration and Holy Wrath, along with other powerful Spell Power abilities like Exorcism and Judgement. A build like this can be great for trash, but don't forget to swap back to your regular gear before pulling a boss!

Retribution Paladin Phase 3 Best In Slot

Warlocks can use the Oblivion Raiment to buff their Seed of Corruption spell. They're already one of the most powerful AoE classes; why not be even stronger? Finally, anyone who can use a two-handed weapon can also venture back into Scarlet Monastery's Armory and pick up Ravager from Herod, and pray for good whirlwind procs.

BLADES OF LIGHT!

Horde players will have access to two Undead-specific consumables: Scourgebane Draught and Scourgebane Infusion. This is from a low-level quest giver in the Ghostlands, Magistrix Aminel, who will give players repeatable quests to pick these items up.

Run An Additional Healer

Some raid teams like to test their limits or push ranks on WarcraftLogs, and that's great! However, if your team is not that type of team, and you're struggling with deaths on these fights, running a 6th healer could solve these issues. Although there is a bit of a DPS check on Kaz'Rogal, the rest of the fights do not require specific damage requirements. Archimonde is the prime example of that, where you want to push for perfect execution to prevent any version of Soul Charge from entering the encounter.

Players should always check to see where they could improve to prevent deaths and wipes, but if you're consistently getting close to a kill and just can't make it to the end, having that extra healer could be what helps you cross the finish line.
