How Big is the Eastern Kingdoms?
To ensure that his character never stopped moving, 720 Zone decided to leave the zone of Teldrassil out of this run. He also took the Talondeep Path at the southern border of Ashenvale to get to Stonetalon Mountains. This method was used so that he wouldn't have to wait for the elevator between the zones of The Barrens and Thousand Needles, instead taking the path into Desolace and Feralas. Similar to his Eastern Kingdoms run, 720 Zone also measures the area of each zone within the continent of Kalimdor by using traced outlines from the in-game map and importing them into Blender.
The Barrens came out to be the largest zone on the continent, with a total area of 4.8 square miles, or 12.3 square kilometers, and the zone of Moonglade was the smallest, at 0.5 Sq/Mi or 1.3 Sq/Km. While the zone of Hyjal is technically inaccessible, it was still measured as 3.6 Sq/Km, making it the 4th smallest zone in Kalimdor. The total area of Kalimdor, including islands and coastline, comes out to 51 square miles or 131 square kilometers, which is about 25% larger than the city of Paris, France.
The City of Paris compared to the continent of Kalimdor
In terms of explorable area, Kalmdor is nearly 1.5 times larger than the continent of Eastern Kingdoms. This could be due to the fact that the continent of Kalimdor was developed later in the creation of World of Warcraft, and developers decided to create new and more sprawling zones on this continent.
