First Look at New Temple of Sethraliss in Mythic+ Season 2

Temple of Sethraliss received some large reworks in preparation for Midnight Season 2. Here's a breakdown of the major changes to the dungeon and how Blizzard addressed old problem points.

Season 2 Overview

Adderis and Aspix

Adderis and Aspix are the first boss of Temple of Sethraliss and have gotten a massive rework. While only one boss is able to take damage still, the other one only has a damage reduction shield, instead of instantly killing you if you accidentally damage it.

All of their abilities are new as well:

Gale Force marks all players with a line attack, forcing players to spread out around the boss. The attack deals damage and pushes players back very far.

Thunder and Lightning is a group soak that then explodes into an AoE that players then have to get out of.

Tempest Winds marks three players, dropping an area denial effect on them after a few seconds. Any players who enters this zone will be silenced for 8 seconds.

Overload causes the boss to attack faster and deal bonus melee damage for 15 seconds.

This fight is very cyclical but has a pretty nasty overlap. Players must place the Area Denial circles in a good location to avoid getting pushed into them by Gale Force. In addition, players want to get pushed in roughly the same direction, as after the push, they only have a few seconds to get into the group soak which is attached to a player. As the fight continues on, there will be more denial zones (but they eventually despawn), and players will need to find a strategy which avoids them getting pushed into a silence puddle, while also being able to get back into the group soak quickly.

Merektha

Merektha is the second boss of Temple of Sethraliss and the elements of the fight are still very similar to old Temple.

One of the major changes to the boss in Midnight Season 2 is that the Burrow phase, where Merektha is untargetable, is now part of the cycle of the boss. Previously, the boss would only burrow twice, at 70% and 40%, but now the boss burrows on a timer. This could lead to some DPS breakpoints on higher keystones.

A Knot of Snakes has been upgraded to target two players, and gives a clear pre-warning of who is being targeted with a green arrow meaning they can stack up under the boss. This can still be broken by any CC ability, but now when the coil is defeated or CC'ed, it also summons snakes.

Thunder Spit targets two players and causes them to summon void zones on their position every second for the next few seconds. These players just run around to avoid getting hit.

Serpentstorm knocks all players back and leaves a short DoT on everyone while summoning lots of swirlies that players have to dodge.

After this, Merektha burrows and players need to defeat the snakes to get Merektha to resurface. There's a poison that can be dispelled or interrupted, but this phase isn't that bad now that Merektha is marked by a clear brown circle.

Galvazzt

Galvazzt is the third boss of Temple of Sethraliss and the fight's difficulty has been significantly altered. Previously, the mechanics of this encounter required players to always be soaking pillars, and players would want to avoid soaking two in a row due to a stacking debuff. Now the encounter has been changed to have a pillar soaking phase, and also a non-pillar soaking phase.

Lightning Spire summons 3 pillars that players will need to intercept. Soaking a beam deals damage to players, and makes them take increased Physical damage, disincentivizing tanks from taking it without a cooldown. Any beam which impacts Galvazzt charges his energy bar which slowly drains over time. If Galvazzt reaches max energy, he gains 25% damage, and all players deal 50% less damage for 20 seconds.

Induction drops a large void zone under him which means that Tanks want to position the boss near the edge of the room and move when necessary.

This encounter is likely a lot less stressful for healers as there isn't constant rot damage the entire time, while coordinating who is soaking the next beam. The hard part now will be to coordinate 3 soaks from 3 pillars at once, but players have already done that in Skyreach this season.

Avatar of Sethraliss

The Avatar of Sethraliss encounter has been completely redesigned in Midnight Season 2, and the encounter is a lot more interactive for all players.

The encounter has two phases, one Phase that prevents you from healing the Avatar, and the other Phase allowing you to heal the Avatar.

Starting with the "no healing" phase, three types of adds will spawn that players have to defeat.

Essence Defiler - Do nothing but channel into the Avatar preventing her from being healed. The Phase ends when both are defeated.

Twisted Hexer - Cast an Interruptable Flame Shock. Also marks two players with a Hex that drops a puddle on the ground which hexes them until they leave the area.

Corrupted Guardian - Deals high tank damage, and when it dies does a big swirly to get out of before it drops a Corrupted Lifeforce orb. Two DPS needs to bump into the orb to soak one of the two stacks to cleanse the orb. These players will gain a healing reduction and Physical damage taken debuff which is why you want this to be a DPS.

Once both Defilers are dead, the next phase will start and the Avatar is directly healable and your healer should do massive healing to the Avatar. The Avatar of Sethraliss will cast Consume Lifeforce for every cleansed Orb gaining 8% health and a small HoT. Meanwhile, Faithless Tormentors will spawn in groups and fixate on the healer. If they successfully melee, they apply a healing down effect which stacks. When the adds are below 25% health, the Avatar will execute them, gaining health. This allows for the DPS and tank to have a role in this phase as well.

Other Changes

There's a few other notable changes in this dungeon that are worth mentioning:

You need to pull a lot of trash in this dungeon. While old Temple of Sethraliss gave you 125%+ trash count when going in a straight route in BFA, doing a straight route in Midnight Temple of Sethraliss is only about 85% count.

The dust clouds that caused players to miss abilities are removed.

Orb Maze. Sometimes you found someone that struggled with the Orb maze between the 2nd and 3rd boss. There's an Spark Channeler after this boss that disables the maze when it's defeated.

Eye of Sethraliss Gauntlet. The orb gauntlet has been changed again. Anyone can activate the Orb by clicking it. The closest player will get a small damage over time debuff and granting it energy. During this time, players are attacked by an Orb Watcher and two Temple Disruptors which channel an interruptable Essence Disruption, preventing the orb from gaining energy. Once both orbs at fully energy, the door to the final boss opens.

There is no trash down the stairs to the final area.
