The Classic Team is Hiring & They May Have Already Filled a New Position

Right now, the Classic WoW "universe" consists of The Burning Crusade Anniversary, Mists of Pandaria Classic, Classic Era, Classic Hardcore, and the Season of Discovery realms are still up.

Horizontal Progression in Classic+

We say all of that because right now, the versions of the game released wouldn't exactly call for hiring new people, as they're re-releases of past versions, and development on Season of Discovery has ceased. So, with that in mind, it begs the question: What could the Classic WoW team be hiring for if not for the next big Classic WoW project? Below, we'll examine the recent job postings.

Senior Software Engineer, UI

One of the two job postings for the WoW Classic team is titled "Senior Software Engineer, UI." This position requires "8+ years of professional experience in a software engineering role or equivalent." It has responsibilities such as "Design and implement gameplay and player‑facing UI features that support World of Warcraft Classic systems and content."

Are Mega Servers Right For Classic?

Scrolling back up to the job description, here's what it reads:

The World of Warcraft Classic team is looking for a Senior Software Engineer with a strong gameplay foundation and a passion for building high-quality player-facing UI. In this role, you will contribute to gameplay and UI systems that support an authentic Classic experience while meeting modern expectations for polish, performance, and reliability.

While UI is a key area of focus, you should feel comfortable flexing beyond UI into gameplay and server‑side systems when a feature or problem requires it. You’ll work closely with designers, artists, and engineers to translate gameplay and UI concepts into intuitive, responsive in‑game features. This is an opportunity to make meaningful contributions to a live, beloved game while continuing to grow your technical breadth and depth.

Game Designer, Systems

While we have the link for this job posting, if you click on it, you'll see that this one, a posting for a Systems Game Designer, has since been filled.

What's Happening With Classic in 2026?

However, we did find some postings on job boards that may not be accurate or true to the original job, so feel free to take this with a grain of salt. This one, found on ZipRecruiter, also mentions that the role has been filled, which lends it a bit more credence. If this is it, the job description reads as follows:

Blizzard Entertainment is looking for a talented and experienced Game Designer to join the World of Warcraft Classic team. As a designer on our team, you will be implementing and collaborating across disciplines to bring systems, features, and updates to WoW Classic through iteration, thoughtfulness, cooperation, and feedback.

The ideal candidate has proven experience in game design, a strong aptitude for critical thinking and analysis, outstanding people skills, boundless creativity, a strong visual aesthetic, and a passion for playing and analyzing games.

Two of the responsibilities in particular stuck out:

Work together with team members to design, implement, and tune systems and features in WoW Classic experiences.

Always be thinking and planning for the next gameplay idea that players will love!

What This Could Mean

It seems like the world's worst-kept secret, but we know that Blizzard is working on something in the Classic space, whether that's the community-named Classic+ or something else. It feels as though this will be a version with a larger scope, rather than a seasonal one, given that they're hiring new staff and have already filled one position. We've even seen prominent content creators like Joardee be involved with the creation of a site that's all about Classic+ surveys and feedback.

Also, for months, we've been seeing work done on this mysterious, encrypted "1.60" server. None of this—the 1.60 server or the hiring—would be necessary if we were going to keep getting re-released timelines of TBC Anniversary into Wrath of the Lich King Anniversary and MOP Classic into Warlords of Draenor Classic.

These hirings are just another data point in a series of clues as we await BlizzCon 2026 in September to see what will be revealed.

What do you make of these hirings? What do you think the next WoW Classic project will be? Let us know in the comments below.
