Biggest Changes This Week

Rogue recently received some balance changes, and as a result, their position(s) on the rankings have shifted significantly. Currently, Subtlety is at the top of the three specs, but all three have their own niches. We asked our Rogue Class Writer for their thoughts as to when each each spec is preferable and why.

Rogue

Stone Guard is fairly straightforward. Four consistent targets for Blade Flurry will result in Combat dominating this encounter.

Both Feng the Accursed and Gara'Jal are high uptime single target encounters, making Assassination and Subtlety the way to go.

Spirit Kings has a bit of nuance. At least one Rogue in the raid will likely want to be Combat to Kidney Shot Subetai the Swift, allowing DPS to continue damaging through the Sleight of Hand. As for the other Rogue(s), Assassination or Subtlety are both fine, with Subtlety in the lead currently.

Elegon is a toss-up between Subtlety and Combat. Combat excels in damaging the Energy Charges that spawn with Blade Flurry, whereas Subtlely has higher Boss damage.

Will of the Emperor shows promise for all 3 Rogue specs. Personally, I'd choose to be Assassination on this encounter as it requires the least focus on rotation, making the dance easier.

Imperial Vizier Zor'lok slightly favors Subtlety over Assassination. Subtlety excels with its low cooldowns on encounters with forced downtime.

Blade Lord Ta'yak, similarly to Zor'lok, slightly favors Subtlety. Additionally, your execute phase, as Assassination, is broken up in the final phase, making it difficult to gain too much value from Dispatch.

Garalon is a solid encounter for Combat. It's difficult to ascertain from logs which spec is certainly the best, but Combat can cleave 40% of the damage from the leg off onto the boss, making them a solid target choice for "ethical" dps. If you don’t care about leg DPS, then Subtlety or Assassination are fine choices.

Wind Lord Mel'jarak isn’t a fight with additional enemies, despite what others might say. This boss is a test of how much single-target burst you can muster during the vulnerability window. With that in mind, Subtlety currently outshines the other two specs and is the choice for this encounter.

Amber-Shaper Un'sok is another unusual encounter with the best spec being what your raid needs, whether that’s consistent cleave or single target. If you're falling behind on Slimes, Combat is the play; however, if you're struggling to burst Un'sok in the final phase, then Subtlety is the decision.

Grand Empress Shek'zeer is both an encounter with extended single target and sustained cleave. Combat or Subtlety are fine for this encounter. Assassination loves the extended execution phase. However, it doesn't enjoy the potential of losing uptime on their important cooldown Vendetta, due to being randomly chosen by Visions of Demise.

Protectors of the Endless is plagued with forced downtime as players routinely will need to step out and receive their stacks of Corrupted Essence. For this reason, I'd suggest that you play Subtlety, though Combat seems to also be performing surprisingly well.

For Tsulong, I recommend playing Subtlety. Assassination is also a viable choice with added utility from Mark of Death, enabling a five-combo point Kidney Shot on the Unstable Shas during the day phase; however, depending on your healers, you may miss significant uptime on the execute phase.

Lei Shi heavily favors Subtlety Rogues over other specs as Subtlety's short and powerful CDs are perfect for an encounter that has volatile moments of downtime.

Sha of Fear, like a few other bosses, comes down to what your raid requires. Do you need more single-target DPS for the platforms you're sent off to in Phase 1? Go Subtlety. Do you need more cleave damage to the Dread Spawns in Phase 2? Go Combat. The directional requirements Sha consistently puts you through in Phase 1 can make Subtlety quite annoying to play. For most guilds, I'd recommend Combat.

Disclaimers and Source

The data for this article was taken from the Terrace of Endless Spring, Heart of Fear, & Mogu'shan Vaults Statistics Page on Warcraft Logs. We will examine the data for the 95th percentile and show the overall results to paint a better picture.

The idea of this article is to give a perspective of the current state of class balance for Mists of Pandaria Phase 2, meaning this is an incomplete picture of Mists of Pandaria balance.

We refer to perspective, as there are inherent biases in examining the data in this way.

Specs considered underpowered are generally played less and tend to appear weaker than they are.

This happens as many performance-oriented players tend to play the strongest spec or class, increasing the gap between top and bottom specs even further.

Position of specs for the 95th percentile might be skewed by alternative strategies and parse funneling. We're including the chart showing all percentiles' results to paint a better picture for all specs.

Statistics displayed below show data for 25-player heroic difficulty. For 10-player difficulty, please visit Warcraft Logs.
