Biggest Changes This Week
For this week, we are highlighting some of the classes with multiple similarly performing specs, and why certain specs excel in certain fights.
Frost & Unholy Death Knight
Frost & Unholy Death Knights are sticking close together with the release of ToES. We asked our Death Knight DPS Guide Writer what makes each spec shine.
Frost has the added benefit of going into ToES with 509 weapons, while Unholy only has 502.
Both specs do great because the fights are relatively long, giving you multiple CDs and prolonged executes with Soul Reaper.
Tsulong has a lot of small adds, which Frost excels at cleaving while doing high single-target damage.
The same argument can be made for Sha of Fear in P2 for both Unholy and Frost. You just do great single-target damage, while having the ability to passively cleave the adds.
Furthermore, most bosses have a lot of magic damage, which can be absorbed with AMS to further increase the damage of both specs.
Warlock
While not at the top of the rankings, Affliction & Destruction are almost equal. We asked our Warlock Guide Writer for their thoughts on when and why each spec excels.
Affliction shines in fights where damage‑over‑time can continue ticking during movement or on multiple targets (Garalon’s legs, Sha of Fear’s Terror Spawns).
Demonology excels where sustained cleave or hitting pet damage is a benefit (Wind Lord Mel’jarak’s add army, Blade Lord Ta’yak’s constant movement).
Destruction leads when burst and single‑target focus outweigh multitarget DPS (Protectors of the Endless and Tsulong), especially when quick target swaps or interrupts are needed.
Arcane Mage
Mages aren't quite in the same boat as Warlocks and Death Knights. Arcane is the dominant spec by far, but the other two specializations are still played despite that.
Arcane is a specialization that thrives under controlled environments, now that weeks have passed and raids have sorted out their strategies for HoF and are getting a better feel for what they can get away with - Arcane thrives even further. It especially does well in bosses with massive damage amplifying phases, such as Wind Lord Mel'jarak, Amber-Shaper Un'sok, and Protectors of the Endless. Against these bosses, it's possible to simply hold major cooldowns, which scale greatly with said boss modifiers.
As the fights get shorter, Arcane will still improve its performance slightly, but since other specializations scale harder with gear and the increased item level from Landfall releasing soon, the actual overall performance of the specialization is expected to remain below the melee damage dealers, and maybe even get caught up by some of the other casters.
Overall, it's in a good spot; it requires good knowledge of the fights and a solid raid team and kill time to do well, so it's not a perfect choice for every Mage, but it's a great one for those who are aware of its strengths.

Disclaimers and Source
The data for this article was taken from the Terrace of Endless Spring, Heart of Fear, & Mogu'shan Vaults Statistics Page on Warcraft Logs. We will examine the data for the 95th percentile and show the overall results to paint a better picture.
The idea of this article is to give a perspective of the current state of class balance for Mists of Pandaria Phase 1, meaning this is an incomplete picture of Mists of Pandaria balance.
We refer to perspective, as there are inherent biases in examining the data in this way.
Specs considered underpowered are generally played less and tend to appear weaker than they are.
This happens as many performance-oriented players tend to play the strongest spec or class, increasing the gap between top and bottom specs even further.
Position of specs for the 95th percentile might be skewed by alternative strategies and parse funneling. We're including the chart showing all percentiles' results to paint a better picture for all specs.
Statistics displayed below show data for 25-player heroic difficulty. For 10-player difficulty, please visit Warcraft Logs.
