When players list an item on the Auction House, a deposit is required. The deposit is given back to players if the item successfully sells, but is lost if the item is cancelled or the Auction expires. In the original version of WoW, the deposit requirement depends on the item's Vendor Price and the duration:
DurationDeposit Cost
2 Hours5% of Vendor Price
8 Hours20% of Vendor Price
24 Hours60% of Vendor Price
Vendor Price of 4 Silver and 61 Copper
In WoW: Forever, there appears to be one more rule: A minimum of 1 Silver is required.
With a Vendor price of 4 Silver and 61 Copper, we would expect an 8-hour listing of this item to require 92 Copper, but this is listed at 1 Silver. Similarly, if you take any cheap vendor item, the Deposit is always listed as 1 Silver. This increased deposit imposes a significant risk to players if the item doesn't sell within the time frame. Many players will likely not be willing to risk a silver to put things on the Auction House for time being, instead vendoring the items. At least in the early game, 1 Silver is a hefty fee to list items on the Auction House if you're afraid that they won't sell. To combat this, you can try to list items in larger stacks or just vendor items to get a guaranteed amount if you're afraid of the risk.
Is This Intended?
On the Beta, this functionality was noticed, but was reported as a bug, as the listed deposit was not showing the correct amount of gold taken from players. On live servers, the deposit now matches. It is still unknown if a minimum deposit is intended, and this may be a result of WoW: Forever using the Retail client. The retail client has a 1 silver minimum deposit, and was in effect in 2018 (oir earlier), as an old blog post references the minimum deposit amount.
