It Costs Up to 5,700 Gold to Save a Full Set of Transmog to an Outfit Slot in Midnight

The transmog system in Midnight has outfit slots for purchase, but it still costs 5,700 Gold at level 90 to save a transmog to each slot.

Blizzard has announced that the costs for unlocking Outfit slots will be changing. This section is now outdated.

In Midnight, there are two types of Transmog costs:

Purchasing Outfit slots

Assigning a set to an Outfit slot

Players will still be able to create outfits like they do with the current transmog system under a system called "Customs Sets". Custom Sets are free to use, but equipping an outfit in Midnight will require you to assign it to an "outfit slot".

Purchasing Outfit Slots

Outfits slots allow you to swap between all the different assigned loadouts for free. Swapping between Outfit slots is as easy as pressing a button on your action bar and after a brief animation, your character will have a new transmog!

Outfit slots can also be assigned to automatically swap in various scenarios using the "situations" system. Want to swap when you're in a certain spec, location or even mounted? You can.

If you only use one or two transmogs, the free outfit slots might be good enough for you. Outfit slots come with a bonus -- when you upgrade your gear, you won't need to transmog them at all which will be fantastic for leveling and at the start of a Season.

If you want to buy more Outfit slots, they start rather cheap at 500 gold, but quickly scale in price up to 100k gold.

Saving Outfit Slots

In order to use any transmog, you need to "save" it onto an Outfit Slot. If you want to create bunch of transmogs, you're able to do that for free -- but in order to see them on your character in game, you must save them to an Outfit Slot.

Saving an Outfit slot is very similar to live, you pick what you want and then you pay gold based on the slots you're changing. You can continue to change it, but you will need to pay every time you change it. However, once a set is saved to an Outfit slot, it's free to swap between Outfit slots.

Saving an outfit slot seems to cost up to 5,700 gold for a full set.

Live Costs of Saving Transmogs

It's first important to note that costs of transmog scales with level, even on the live game. At level 73, a full set of transmog costs ~200 gold.

Comparing this to a level 80 on live servers, which costs around ~930 gold. There is slight variance in costs.

Midnight Costs of Saving Transmogs

For a level 80 in the new Midnight Transmog system, a full set costs ~4,084 gold which is around a 4.4x as much gold. This increases to 5,700 gold for a level 90 character.

If you want to save some gold, you'll want to make sure to get save your transmogs to Outfit Slots at the lowest level possible.

Are You Saving Gold with the Midnight Transmog System?

The big question for a lot of people is are you saving gold? That's really hard to answer and will change based on each player's individual habits. We can however take some common examples and see how it would effect them.

We'll do rough calculations for level 80 -- 930 gold for a full set on live, 4084 gold for a full set on beta with the Outfit system.

And remember this is per character as the system is NOT account-wide.

One-Transmog

If you only use one-transmog on a character and never change, this system looks to be neutral at worst or a better case scenario for you. In Midnight, you will not need to buy any additional Outfit slots and you will only need to pay a one-time cost of ~4,084 gold for your initial saving of your transmog, totaling just over 4k gold.

In the current live system, you only pay 930 gold up front, but every single time you do a full swap out of your gear, you are paying an additional 930 gold. This means that after 5 gear swaps, you have overpaid the amount you would pay in the new system. I assume most people will replace their gear at least once while leveling, and at least once per season making you break even after the end of Season 3 of Midnight. The longer you play, the more times you change your gear out, the more money you're saving in the long run.

Two-Transmog

The two-transmog user is very similar, except with a higher up front cost. No additional outfit slots needed, but a slightly higher up front cost. Considering how often you would typically swap transmogs, you'll quickly save much more gold in the long term because the savings stack up when you would swap your gear or transmogs.

Multi-Transmog

This is where it gets much more complicated and is going to be dependent on the user. The choice here is buying more outfit slots or paying the save fee multiple times. The choice here comes down to how often you are going to be saving over an Outfit slot and if that cost is going to be more than just buying a new Outfit slot outright. If you're going to swap 50k on saving loadouts in the next year, and the next Outfit slot is 500g, chances are you should probably just buy the Outfit slot. The first few additional outfit slots are very cheap and should usually be the choice for players.

There's also a level of convenience that occurs -- if you have a lot of situations that you want transmogs for, you might just like the ability to swap automatically every time.
