Class Writer Thoughts
While tanks are comfortably in the top spots, Affliction Warlock has managed to sneak in amongst them. We asked our Warlock Guide Writer for their thoughts on why Affliction was performing so well in Throne of Thunder so far.

Affliction Warlock

In a phase defined by multi-target encounters like Council of Elders and add-intensive fights such as Tortos and Primordius, Affliction’s ability to maintain high-priority DoTs across multiple enemies truly shines. While the specialization was already firmly in the A-tier, the specific mechanics of these encounters have propelled them to the top of the overall DPS rankings for Throne of Thunder.

On the opposite end, we asked our Hunter Guide Writer for their thoughts on why Hunter were performing so poorly so far.

Hunter

Hunters currently sit at the bottom of the DPS rankings in Throne of Thunder, though the situation is a bit more nuanced than it first appears. On a pure single target encounter, we perform somewhere in the mid-range. The real issue here is scaling. Other class benefits exponentially from new trinkets and set bonuses while our stats only provide linear DPS increases. This means that as gear improves, the gap between Hunters and other classes will decrease.

Another reason is that we struggle with cleave damage, and there are many fights like that in Throne of Thunder.

Some potential improvements could be allowing Serpent Sting to scale with Haste for Survival, increasing Steady Shot damage for Marksmanship, or extending the Beast Cleave duration for Beast Mastery so that we can maintain our single target DPS while cleaving. These changes could help us compete without overhauling the entire class. Unfortunately this was all expected before Throne even released and it's unlikely we'll see any significant change before Siege of Orgrimmar, if at all.

Disclaimers and Source

The data for this article was taken from the Throne of Thunder Statistics Page on Warcraft Logs. We will examine the data for the 95th percentile and show the overall results to paint a better picture.

The idea of this article is to give a perspective of the current state of class balance for Mists of Pandaria Phase 3, meaning this is an incomplete picture of Mists of Pandaria balance.

We refer to perspective, as there are inherent biases in examining the data in this way.

Specs considered underpowered are generally played less and tend to appear weaker than they are.

This happens as many performance-oriented players tend to play the strongest spec or class, increasing the gap between top and bottom specs even further.

Position of specs for the 95th percentile might be skewed by alternative strategies and parse funneling. We're including the chart showing all percentiles' results to paint a better picture for all specs.

Statistics displayed below show data for 25-player heroic difficulty. For 10-player difficulty, please visit Warcraft Logs.
