Hearthsteel – New Premium Currency Datamined in Midnight

A new currency called Hearthsteel has been datamined on the Midnight Alpha, presumably used to purchase housing items from the in-game shop.

It's not yet confirmed that this will be a premium currency, which is to say one bought using real money and spent on exclusive in-game purchases, though it is heavily implied by the varied bundles of increasing amounts seen in the artwork, which follows similar premium conventions. Though this could be a big change to the way in-game shop items are purchased in WoW, this wouldn't technically be the first premium currency either.

The WoW Token can also be considered a form of premium currency, if a pointedly less exclusive one, due to the ability to easily earn gold in game.

Trader's Tender could be purchased for a short time in China, but has not yet been sold directly in other regions of the world. It has been bundled with more traditional purchases, however, making it somewhat ambiguous.

Battle.net Balance is another gray area that doesn't quite fit the normal definition, since it isn't exclusive to WoW and has a 1:1 monetary value, though it can be used to make in-game store purchases and is still a one-way currency that cannot be reclaimed outside of the Battle.net network.

Otherwise, World of Warcraft has has so far eschewed more traditional premium currencies like Runestones in Hearthstone, Gems in Heroes of the Storm, or Platinum in Diablo IV. The real question is whether this Hearthsteel will be used exclusively for purchases related to housing or extended to other aspects of the in-game store.

Premium currencies tend to encourage additional purchases to make use of leftover change.

In any event, we do know that housing items will be sold through the in-game store. It was outright confirmed and even previewed by content creators at the Warcraft 30th Anniversary event in Boston, though not many specifics have been shared. No word yet on exactly what will be featured either, though the items are said to be comparable to current WoW Shop mounts, pets, and transmog: less canonical items, and more extra decorations that are fun and "nice to have."
