From Narrative to End-Game Content – Blizzard Interviews With Inven Global

Ahead of Patch 12.1, Inven Global conducted two interviews with World of Warcraft's staff. The first interview was with Associate Game Director Paul Kubit and Lead Quest Designer Rachel Vought, who sat down to discuss the narrative and open-world content coming in Curse of Ulatek, including the new Coiled Isle zone.

Midnight Season 2 Interview From Inven Global

A second interview with Lead Combat Designers Taylor Sanders and Andrew de Sousa focused on the upcoming endgame content, including the Venomous Abyss raid, Season 2 Mythic+ Dungeons, and the upcoming changes to World Bosses.

Narrative & Open-World Content

The goal with reintroducing the Amani Trolls was to honor the past while also allowing for future stories to be told about their civilization.

The narrative of Ulatek fits into the World Soul Saga because Zul'jan wants to try to use this being as a weapon against Xal'atath's Twilight's Blade forces.

Once Ulatek is defeated, players will once again join forces with Arator and learn about the consequences of facing Ulatek.

The Altar of Corruption will be unlocked account-wide once it is earned on one character.

The design philosophy of open-world content on the Coiled Isle is to guide players to the content they might enjoy, rather than making players feel like they need to complete content in order to be rewarded.

The ongoing restrictions against combat add-ons are meant to make players feel like they're not required to download add-ons in order to play the game.

There are no plans to block add-ons that affect accessibility, track collection activities, or change how the game presents information.

End-Game Content Changes

Instanced Lair Bosses will be introduced in Patch 12.1 to solve two problems:

World Difficulty is meant for alts, players who are more casual, or players who prefer to play alone, but still wish to participate in raid content.

Lair Bosses will be designed with role flexibility in mind, meaning that groups won't necessarily need a Tank or Healer to defeat the boss.

Unlike the original PTR test, rewards from Lair Bosses will not be Warbound.

In Mythic+ Season 2, past dungeons, such as Kings' Rest and Temple of Sethraliss, will have updated boss encounters, while Ruby Life Pools will have changes that create a smoother experience.

The developers intend to provide a smoother difficulty curve between Normal, Heroic, and Mythic raiding in Season 2.
