Dodge Lightning Strikes for Fun and Nostalgia in Val

While exploring the icy world of Val in Patch 12.0.7, players may find themselves caught in a storm, dodging lightning strikes in a way that feels very familiar to older RPG fans!

Patch 12.0.7 Overview

Within the Glacial Reservoir area of the void-occupied planet, players can interact with a Strange Storm Cell in either the Normal or Heroic version to summon a localized storm, charging the snowy hellscape with violent electricity. Every few seconds within the area, a bolt of lightning will strike down at the player's location, preceded by a brief corona discharge on the ground before it strikes. This is a warning to use the special action button to jump and spin to avoid the electric assault, though failing to do so will knock down the player for a moment.

Aside from sharing very similar mechanics, the Thunder Plains bonus objective is also a clear reference to the Lightning Dodger minigame from Final Fantasy X, which took place in an area of the same name and rewarded players for dodging up to 200 lightning strikes in a row. Although enterprising players would come up with creative ways to cheese the minigame, in the early 2000's, it was infamous for being a brutally difficult and time consuming requirement to unlock some of the best items in the game.

Patch 12.0.7 has its own achievement in A Celestial Pain, requiring players to dodge 100 strikes in a row, though thankfully it doesn't seem to be associated with anything other than bragging rights. Although the storm is localized to the Glacial Reservoir and will not follow players across the entire zone, the Lightning Dancer buff will keep track of dodge progress, incrementing with each success and resetting with each failure.
