Although the addon changes have greatly affected the capability of boss mods to show specific information, all of the popular boss mods continue to work in the expansion, with their own layout and customization. Like all addons, they are now unable to parse the combat log, which means they no longer show rename ability casts to common terms like "shockwave" and "soak" or decide which alerts are shown; Blizzard's Boss Timeline now controls all of that.
Despite this limitation, there are still many things boss mods can do that the built-in timeline cannot. In addition to reskinning elements to be more aesthetically pleasing, Boss Mods can they can effectively make their own timers using the reminder system, fully configurable with countdowns and sounds, as well as add custom audio to Blizzard's three main "pools" of minor, medium, and critical alerts, so you can have that familiar airhorn blaring when its time to move. They've also begun adding audio alerts to Private Auras, which now includes practically every encounter debuff in the game.

So while their functionality may be much more limited in scope, boss mods are still alive and well in Midnight. However much Blizzard insisted that addons shouldn't provide combat advantages, their main concern is avoiding computational problem solving, but allowing players to see and hear warnings is fair game.
Boss Mod Addons for Midnight
Big Wigs Encounter Tools and Deadly Boss Mods are the two OG boss mods, both with comparable features and a dedicated development team releasing constant updates in a timely manner. Highly recommended, though the choice between them is largely a matter of preference.
Better Timeline is a relative newcomer, created to provide a standalone addon version of the popular RaidAbilityTimeline WeakAura.
