In addition to this announcement and shutdown coming just before BlizzCon 2026, it's another piece of the evidence pie regarding the future of Classic WoW, which appears to be Patch 1.60, also known as Project Camelot. Could we see an announcement of the fabled Classic+ during BlizzCon 2026? Perhaps a possible beta and/or release date? Only time will tell, but the shutdowns of Project Ascension and TurtleWoW are certainly reminiscent of the Nostalrius shutdown all those years ago, before the announcement of World of Warcraft Classic at BlizzCon 2017.
The Project Ascension Private Server Has Announced Its Shut Down
With BlizzCon 2026 quickly approaching on September 12th and 13th, one of the most notable private World of Warcraft servers, Project Ascension, has announced that it will be officially shutting down on September 4th. This comes just over 4 months after another notable private server, TurtleWoW announced its shutdown. Blizzard issued a cease-and-desist against Project Ascension in June, and later that month, Blizzard followed through by issuing a Summons Request, informing them of the lawsuit.
