New Default Indicator for Successful and Wasted Interrupts in Patch 12.1

Among the UI updates coming in Patch 12.1, Blizzard has added a new indicator for missed interrupts, though they may be a little too similar to distinguish during hectic combat situations.

All class interrupts (such as Kick, Pummel, Counterspell, etc) will now display a “missed” visual over the target’s head if used while the target was not casting a spell. It will also play a separate sound to represent a missed interrupt. This is intended to help players recognize when enemies or allies have used their interrupt ability even if a spell was not interrupted.

Successful Interrupt

With the release of Midnight, a bright new icon appears upon a executing a successful interrupt, which is unchanged in the upcoming patch.

Missed Interrupt

However, with Patch 12.1, there is now a new audio and visual for a missed kick as well, which is extremely similar, making the two difficult to distinguish in the midst of combat. The initial icon begins with a flash the same way a successful kick does, before fading to dullness, though the animation also finishes quite quickly so this may be difficult to register. The audio effect is also slightly different from a successful interrupt, though not enough to really stand out.

Thoughts

Having two alerts feels somewhat redundant, as the goal would be more easily accomplished with just one - either an icon on success or an icon on failure would be more obvious than slightly different variants for each. There are not any new menu options to control the behavior at this time either, so players will not have the option to customize these alerts for themselves.
