Content That Was Cut From the Original Warlords of Draenor Expansion

Less than two months away from BlizzCon, speculation season is in full swing. We recently reported that the Warlords of Draenor Collector’s Edition mount and pet have been in the game's data files since the launch of Mists of Pandaria Classic. This may be a clue for where progression servers are going next, but we'll have to wait until September 12th for confirmation.

Did Blizzard Tease WoD & Legion Classic?

While it's uncertain whether Classic servers will progress into Warlords of Draenor, many players have been discussing their desire to revisit this expansion, perhaps with changed or added content. As many WoW players are aware, the Garrison system caused a lot of planned content to be delayed or cut entirely, ultimately leading to one of the worst content droughts in WoW's history. Could Blizzard use the lessons of the past to re-release WoD and include content that was previously cut?

While the video is nearly five years old, WoW content creator hirumaredx compiled all of the content that was originally planned to release during Warlords of Draenor, but was unfortunately cut due to time constraints. In this article, we'll go over some of the major features that could make Warlords of Draenor Classic a success.

Additional Zones

Ogre Continent

In the bottom-left corner of the map of Draenor, there lies a mysterious, unexplorable landmass. In the lead-up to the release of the Warlords of Draenor expansion, this was described as a continent dominated by Ogres, who were fierce enemies of the Orcs.

While this additional zone could have served as a way to tell the story of where Ogres originally came from, this continent was never available in-game. It's possible that Blizzard intended for players to explore more of the world of Draenor in future expansions. However, nearly 10 years after the end of WoD, this landmass remains unavailable, and the homeland of the Ogres remains a mystery.

Farahlon

With Draenor being the version of Outland before the Legion invaded, many zones on the map resemble those that first appeared in The Burning Crusade. Other than the obvious examples of Shadowmoon Valley & Nagrand, other zones that changed include:

Spires of Arak & Talador becoming Terokkar Forrest

Tanaan Jungle becoming Hellfire Peninsula

Frostfire Ridge/Zangar Sea becoming Zangarmarsh

Gorgrond becoming Blade's Edge Mountains

That only leaves out Netherstorm.

Taking a look at the original map of Draenor, there is an unnamed island off the northeastern coast of the continent. This zone is known as Farahlon, and it is the version of Netherstorm that existed before the Burning Legion invaded Draenor.

Ruins of Farahlon (TBC)

While this zone was not originally intended to be available with the release of the expansion, there was an object on the Patch 6.2 PTR that hinted players would be exploring this zone - Pearl of Farahlon. It is speculated that this item would be used in crafting the Legendary Ring; however, this quest was altered once it was determined that Farahlon would not make it into the game.

Other Islands

In addition to these larger zones that never made it into the game, there are also several smaller islands from the Warlords of Draenor Alpha map that went missing as well.

While it's possible that the easternmost island was repurposed and became Ashran, the two islands on the southwestern side of the map were completely removed.

PvE Group Content

Shattrath Raid

During the Warlords of Draenor reveal at BlizzCon, an early map showed a Shattrath Raid in the zone of Talador. However, this was never acknowledged by the developers during any of the BlizzCon panels.

It is theorized that this raid was cut early in the development of the expansion, instead allowing the developers to focus more time on the Garrison system. There's also an in-game gravestone marked with the name "Ray D. Tear" (raid tier), referencing the rumor that the development of Garrisons cost players an entire raid tier-worth of content.

Zangar Sea World Boss

While the Zangar Sea is technically in the Warlords of Draenor expansion, it was originally expected to be an entire underwater zone, similar to Vashj'ir from the Cataclysm expansion.

Unfortunately, the entire zone of the Zangar Sea was reduced to just being used in a couple of quests. Additionally, the lack of content in this zone led to a scrapped World Boss, known as the Fungal Whale.

In addition to the above Zone and PvE content that was cut, there were also bigger plans for an Alliance Capital City in Karabor (Black Temple) & more significant usage of the Bladespire Citadel for the Horde. Finally, while it did see use in the Grimrail Depot dungeon, there was a system of trains in the zone of Gorgrond that appeared to be a scrapped fast travel system for player use.
