Avoid Diminishing Returns to Maximize Pearls in Abyss Anglers

Abyss Anglers is a fun new minigame in Patch 12.0.5 awarding Abyss Pearls to those brave enough to explore the underwater depths of Zul'Aman, but spending all of your time maximizing score during each dive may not be as efficient as it seems!

Abyss Anglers Location, Dives, and Rewards

The event itself is very straightforward, with practically every action from discovering forgotten treasures to taking down Mythic and Legendary sea creatures earning points, which convert into Angler Pearls at the end of the dive. Spent on suit upgrades, unlocking additional objectives, and to collect cosmetic rewards, this is an all-inclusive currency that players will want to maximize in order to get everything that the Abyss Anglers have to offer.

The blue oxygen bar indicates remaining dive time, though leaving early using Surface! is important to maximizing farm loops.

Spend your Breath Wisely
But there is a catch. While more points results in more pearls, the exchange is not completely linear and actually diminishes very hard at higher values. This makes it much more efficient to do short high-value loops before manually ending the activity, rather than than spending the entire dive explicitly maximizing points every time.

Early on, simply reaching around 2,000 points seems to be the most efficient in terms of time spent, though intense farming will require quickly restarting the activity over and over again. After getting some upgrades, 10-15k score seems to be the sweet spot, depending on your route.

You may need a few suit upgrades first, but this type of route will earn far more pearls than staying down the whole time.

Angling for Achievements
While these routes will help players farm Abyss Pearls to unlock suit upgrades and cosmetic rewards more efficiently, there are also several new achievements earned through diving, some of which unlock specific rewards of their own. Abyss Anglers: Certified Depthdiver and Abyss Anglers: One with the Depths in particular are tied to points, and there are various other achievements for completing odd tasks under the sea that might not be encountered when repeating the same route.

These achievements take a long time, so they aren't all required for the Abyss Anglers: Idol of the Depths meta achievement, though completionists may still wish to spend more of their dive time progressing multiple things at once, rather than strictly farming the same Pearl loop over and over again.
