Chinese Exclusive Lunar New Year Mystery Box Promotion

Thunderfire Games has announced a Lunar Mystery Box promotion, confirming that at least a couple of the recently datamined Lunar Festival collectables will be exclusive to China.

Team up and spend together to receive great gifts!

Included in the promotion is the newly datamined Stormgilded Celestial mount and Gilded Coil Spire toy, alongside a Golden reskin of the Obsidian Worldbreaker mount so far only seen in the promotional image. While the other datamined toys, transmog, pet, and decor are not included in this particular mystery box, the announcement also teases an upcoming New Year's Fortune Event and Battle.net store sale, which could include some or all of the remaining datamined items. Therefore, it is currently unclear whether any of the rest will be available to the rest of the world or not.

In addition to the two new mounts are six more rewards, most of which return from the original TCG.

Reins of the Spectral Tiger

X-51 Nether-Rocket

X-51 Nether-Rocket X-TREME

50x Blazing Fire Sandbox Horse (new consumable, presumably similar to the Sandbox Tiger)

25x Azure Dragon Soaring Flame (new consumable, presumably similar to various fireworks)

50x Path of Cenarius

Gatcha!

Similar to last year's Blazing Royal Firehawk and Golden Ashes of Al'ar promotion, prizes are earned by opening Landro's Loot Box, purchased in the store for about ¥100 RMB ($14 USD) each. Eight additional boxes are given out as free rewards for personal purchase milestones, while players can also "team up" with up to nine others to earn up to four more boxes from their purchases.

1 point = 1 RMB, for a total of ¥1,7000 RMB ($245 USD) individually and another ¥5,000 RMB ($719 USD) spent across the team to earn all 12 boxes.

Players can buy as many boxes as they want on top of the twelve freebies though, which not only allows them to play the odds, but also acquire duplicates. Unlike most collectables, these prizes are not bind-on-pickup and can be looted more than once, allowing them to be traded not only between players, but also game modes, with several of the rewards redeemable on Retail, Classic, or Titan Reforged servers. This means a determined player needs to acquire more than one in order to use them in multiple game modes. Considering that these promotional items have not yet returned or been made available since, this also creates a lucrative secondary market for savvy dealers who hold onto their rewards - the Golden Ashes of Al'ar now sells for nearly ¥11,000 RMB ($1,600 USD)!

More Coming Soon
While this promotion only accounts for two of the twenty-three Lunar Festival themed items datamined last week, the teaser closes with a banner advertising a "New Year's Fortune" event and Battle.net store sale coming soon. This does not confirm, but does give us a reasonable belief that more of the datamined items will be included: the Thunderhoof Celestial, Azure Thunder Coil Pillar, and Jade Monument being most likely, as counterparts to today's Mystery Box prizes.

New Year's Fortune event / Battle.net sale is about to begin, please stay tuned!

Whether the Auspicious Pixiu pet, Ensemble: Scorching Conqueror and Scorching Polearm transmog, Fortune's Waving Cat and Gilded Fountain toys, or 13 pieces of decor will also be included remains to be seen, though it does stand to reason that at least some of them would be included in the worldwide Lunar Festival event this February.
