Sylvanas Windrunner’s Return in Midnight Teased in Developer Interview

In an interview with Psybear_TV, Lead Game Designer Maria Hamilton teased the return of Sylvanas Windrunner during Midnight!

When asked about the appearance of characters beyond the expected blood elves and void elves during our fight against Xal'atath in Quel'thalas, Lead Game Designer Maria Hamilton was asked specifically about the return of Sylvanas, to which she teased the reappearance of the iconic Dark Lady!

Well, I don't want to spoil things, so I feel like you will see some Sylvanas at some point here, that seems very likely.

This isn't the first time we've been teased about the future return of Sylvanas, with her cameo in patch 10.1.7 during the Forsaken Heritage questline offering similar hints. At the end of that storyline, a unique questline becomes available to Loyalist players from Battle for Azeroth, where Sylvanas indicates her desire to stand with her people in the Horde once more in the future.

Given the premise of Midnight as a defense of the Sunwell from a dark army set on corrupting it, the potential return of Sylvanas comes as no surprise. Sylvanas is a character who needs little introduction as one of WoW's most iconic, popular, and controversial characters rolled into one, and her ties to Quel'thalas are well known.

In addition to the setting, the Worldsoul Saga has also featured her older sister Alleria in the starring role, leading our fight against the Void as she grapples with her ties to her high elven identity. Sylvanas and Alleria parted on unfriendly terms at the end of Shadowlands, with Alleria remaining uncertain of Sylvanas' potential for redemption even as their sister Vereesa retains hope. A reunion of the sisterly trio to help Alleria come to terms with herself as she clashes with Xal'atath would make for a fitting character moment for all three Windrunner siblings.

Additionally, we'll certainly be seeing mentions of Sylvanas and her sisters during the upcoming Windrunner Spire dungeon in Midnight. Placed in the newly unified Eversong zone, this leveling dungeon takes us back to the home of the Windrunner sisters to explore the secrets and tragedies of their past in the form of ghostly echoes.

Maria Hamilton certainly could have simply meant a cameo from Sylvanas in this dungeon, but given her popularity and relevance to the expansion, as well as Ion Hazzikostas' knowing smirk upon being asked the question, it seems more likely that the Banshee Queen will be making her proper return from the Shadowlands at some point in Midnight. Either way, we have plenty of Windrunners to look forward to during the upcoming expansion.
