Biggest Changes This Week
Unholy Death Knight
Unholy DK has remained strong at the top of the rankings, and anyone familiar with the spec likely understands why. Here is the explanation as per our Unholy Death Knight Guide Writer:
Unholy is in a great position on almost every boss. Both Diseases and Summon Gargoyle benefit massively from % damage modifiers, which are available on 3 out of 6 bosses.
Additionally, any cleave fight, such as Will of the Emperor or The Stone Guard, will greatly favor Unholy. Elegon is the best of both worlds, providing both a stacking damage buff and an opportunity to spread diseases to lots of targets at once.
Windwalker Monk
Windwalker Monks took a tumble this week, falling from 3rd place to 8th. Here is what our Windwalker Guide Writer had to say:
Windwalker largely wants longer fights. Tigerseye Brew takes time to build, and as people gain more gear and fight gear shorter, the initial on-pull burst becomes a bigger relative proportion of the damage on a fight.
In the original release of Mists of Pandaria, this often led to Windwalker Monk being fantastic for progression, but also caused it to fall off when the raids were on farm.
Arms Warrior
Arms Warrior landed itself solidly in 5th place, up from 7th last week. We asked our Arms Guide Writer for their thoughts as to why:
Mogu'shan Vaults draws out the strength of Arms. On all fights except one, you can cleave to some extent, without it being purely for padding.
Warriors are also notorious for scaling incredibly well with weapons. The power spike going from a 463 Heroic weapon to a 502 Starshatter is a massive leap, giving Arms a massive push ahead of the pack.
Protection Warrior
Protection Warrior has been at the top of the DPS consistently, thanks largely to Vengeance. This week, though, they added a lot of space between themselves and 2nd place. We asked our Protection Warrior Guide Writer for their thoughts:
Protection Warriors, despite already performing very well in previous weeks, have had an almost meteoric rise in the higher percentiles in this reset, and this is to be expected.
The further and further into the raid tier we get, the more tanks will outperform their DPS counterparts in the higher percentiles as raids start playing around Vengeance, and no tank does this better than the Warrior.
While they don't necessarily have that strong of an offensive Attack Power modifier scaling outside of Execute, their ability to funnel Vengeance into being all but immortal through Shield Barrier makes it a lot easier for the average tank to abuse raid mechanics to deal high damage, whereas other tanks would need to coordinate strong defensive cooldowns to survive.
Additionally, Vengeance has an Attack Power cap equal to that of your maximum health, and on a fight like Elegon, a tank will quite easily max out on Vengeance while tanking Cosmic Spark without your raid cleaving them down after the intermission. Protection Warriors can make that cap higher with Last Stand, whereas other tanks are at the mercy of other Warriors in their group using Rallying Cry.
While Protection Warriors aren't necessarily the highest damage-dealing tank, assuming all Attack Power metrics are equal, their ability to easily survive once they reach certain Vengeance thresholds, along with the relative ease to cheese Vengeance in Mogu'shan Vaults, makes them all but untouchable in terms of offensive throughput.
Guardian Druid
Guardian Druids are in an odd position. They are performing well at high percentiles, but there aren't a lot of people playing the spec. This causes a bit of a skewed look at the numbers, as the people willing to play an off-meta spec are likely willing to put in a lot more effort to make sure they perform well.
Guardian druids have solid throughput, but people didn't bring them to prog because they offer very little to the raid. Now, while the raid is on farm, people are more willing to bring tanks like Guardians who perform well offensively, especially on encounters where you can utilize short bursts of cleave.
Disclaimers and Source
The data for this article was taken from the Mogu'shan Vaults Statistics Page on Warcraft Logs. We will examine the data for the 95th percentile and show the overall results to paint a better picture.
The idea of this article is to give a perspective of the current state of class balance for Mists of Pandaria Phase 1, meaning this is an incomplete picture of Mists of Pandaria balance.
We say perspective, as there are inherent biases in looking at the data this way.
Specs considered underpowered are generally played less and tend to appear weaker than they are.
This happens as many performance-oriented players tend to play the strongest spec or class, increasing the gap between top and bottom specs even further.
Position of specs for the 95th percentile might be skewed by alternative strategies and parse funneling. We're including the chart showing all percentiles' results to paint a better picture for all specs.
Statistics displayed below show data for 25-player heroic difficulty. For 10-player difficulty, please visit Warcraft Logs.
