Midnight OverviewMidnight Preorders
Strongly representative of Adarus Duskblaze in the Soul Hunters encounter of Manaforge Omega, Devourer is a mid-range DPS specialization, which uses a mix of melee and ranged abilities to deal void and cosmic damage.
Reap – scythe attack that consumes soul fragments.
Voidblade & Hungering Slash – melee combo with retreat.
Collapsing Star – powerful finisher.
Void Ray – piercing beam of Void energy.
Void Metamorphosis – transformation sustained by soul harvesting.
As seen in the Soul Hunter encounter, Devourer Demon Hunters will have an appropriately void-themed Metamorphosis.
You Were Not Prepared
Since the reveal of the void-themed Soul Hunter Adarus Duskblade, rampant rumor and speculation have been flying over whether it was meant to tease a third Demon Hunter specialization. Though Senior Game Producer George Velev softly dismissed the idea during an interview with But Why Tho?, his somewhat vague deflection wasn't technically incorrect - "nothing to announce" has become something of a catchphrase for questions Blizzard developers aren't keen on actually answering for one reason or another. Clearly being saved for the Midnight reveal at Gamescom, it's an understandable brush off, even if the writing was clearly on the wall.
But Why Tho?
Does this mean DHs are next to get a new spec? Not necessarily, according to Velev. “We ended up making some narrative beats in Ghosts of K’aresh around Demon Hunters. So we want to sort of explore that little bit more in the raid.”
“Personally, I always really enjoy raid encounters that are based off of classes or specs. It’s a really good opportunity for encounter designers to flex different muscles. So it’s certainly just a fun exploration on our end to see what’s cool and what’s not. In terms of a new class or spec, we have nothing to announce, but it does sound really cool.”
New Demon Hunter Race
Alongside this reveal, Blizzard has also directly confirmed to us that a new class/race combo in Void Elf Demon Hunters will be available in Midnight. An obviously thematic combination, considering the new specialization, though Horde players may take exception at being left with only one choice. Nightborne seems like a clear analogue, especially given their own past dealings and conflict with demonic forces, though no additional class/race combinations have been confirmed.
Although the quest does not make it seem as though Adarus holds up his end of the bargain, someone else could just as easily teach the void elves.
Originating from a group of blood elves who were exiled from Silvermoon City, the void elves also have a strong connection to the core setting in World of Warcraft: Midnight, and are likely to play a part in the narrative of the coming expansion.
“We fight for the Alliance because we believe in its values. And one day I pray we will bring all of Silvermoon back into the fold.”
— Magister Umbric
Embrace the Void
What has not yet been revealed is how this new specialization will interact with Hero Talents. Normally, each class has an equal number of heroes and specs, creating overlaps between them, so that each specialization has a unique combination of two hero choices.
Each specialization shares hero talents in a way that creates a unique combination of choices.
However, because they only had two specializations, Demon Hunters only have two heroes, with Fel-Scarred and Aldrachi Reaver shared by both. It would seem obvious that a third Hero should be added alongside the new Devourer specialization, though this would also necessitate removing one of the current hero choices from either Havoc or Vengeance in order to make room for the hypothetical new hero and give each specialization a unique combination of choices. With no answer yet provided, exactly how Blizzard intends to approach this quandary remains to be seen.
